The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said that addressing issues of financial mismanagement inherited from the previous government is a prerequisite to broadening employment opportunities in Ghana.
Dr. Prince Amoabeng Aggrey, a member of the NDC Communication Team, spoke on The Forum, a political and current affairs programme on Asaase Radio, emphasizing that the current government is rolling out security jobs in phases due to legacy fiscal challenges.
“As the Interior Minister said, this is just phase one. We want to employ as many people as possible, and as part of our campaign promises, we pledged significant recruitment. But first, we must tackle the (Operation Recover All Loot) ORAL—the misappropriation of funds by the previous regime,” Dr. Aggrey said.
He noted that the government encountered widespread financial rot across multiple sectors upon taking office.
“When we came to power, there was no money to employ people. The debt from 2016 to 2024, left by the Akufo-Addo administration, increased to over 600 billion cedis within eight years, which is alarming and indicative of corruption and reckless borrowing,” he added.
Dr. Aggrey said that phasing employment allows the government to align recruitment with available resources while addressing systemic financial inefficiencies.
“This approach ensures that job creation is sustainable and that public funds are properly managed,” he said, underscoring the link between tackling historical fiscal mismanagement and delivering on employment promises.
The government has faced scrutiny over delays in recruitment across various sectors, and the NDC insists that the phased approach is a necessary step toward financial accountability and long-term public sector sustainability.
