Supreme Court sets 17 July to rule on injuncting Parliament on passage of anti-gay bill

While Amanda Odoi is seeking to injunct the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin and the Clerk of Parliament, Richard Dela Sky, is also seeking the apex court to restrain Parliament from any attempt to push the bill into law

The Supreme Court will on July 17 decide on two separate applications filed by Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky seeking to injunct parliament from forwarding the anti-gay bill known as the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021 to the president to assent into law.

While Amanda Odoi is seeking to injunct the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin and the Clerk of Parliament, Richard Dela Sky, is also seeking the apex court to restrain Parliament from any attempt to push the bill into law.

On Wednesday, 3 July 2024, lawyers for both applicants in a separate suit argued that the bill in itself contravenes the human rights laws of the Constitution.

Citing Article 108 of the 1992 Constitution, both lawyers referred to the fact that the bill, as introduced by a private member, will have an impact on the Consolidated Fund and other Public Funds.
