Sunyani: NHIA sanctions unlicensed healthcare facilities

The Sunyani municipal manager for NHIS, Michael Mahama has called on subscribers of the scheme to report healthcare providers who flout the law

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has sanctioned some healthcare providers for charging unapproved fees under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The Sunyani municipal manager for NHIS, Maxwell Mahama has called on subscribers of the scheme to report healthcare providers who flout the law.

The said providers were operating with fake licences in the Sunyani municipality and were working contrary to rules and regulations of the NHIA.

“Those unscrupulous people are in prison,” Mahama said. “If you go to the Western Region… one of the doctors is in prison… and as I talk to you now even though there is no legal prosecution we have been able to revoke the licence of some of the health facilities including the Thomas and Thomas facility.”

“There was also another laboratory center called Adom, we have closed the facility, because these facilities were going contrary to the rules and regulations of the NHIS,” he told Asaase News.

Mahama said the authority is working around the clock to sanitise the system.

“I have personally gone to the regional hospital and the municipal hospitals to redeem some of the monies for the people. So, if some of these issues come up like that we report to the regions.

“We don’t have the power to sanction. It is the regional and the national who have the power to sanction. So reports have been escalated and we hope that national leaders and Okoe Boye [the CEO of NHIA] will give attention to it and actions will be taken,” Mahama said.
