Sudan’s top General meets Egyptian President amid mounting pressure to end the war

Sudan’s top general, Abdel-Fattah Burhan, met with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo on Thursday as international and regional pressure to resolve the conflict in Sudan intensified.

The meeting followed Burhan’s talks with Saudi officials in Riyadh earlier in the week, during which U.S. envoy Massad Boulos was also present but there was no public indication of a meeting with the American diplomat.

In a statement issued after the talks, the Egyptian presidency expressed support for Sudan while rejecting the establishment or recognition of any parallel entities, calling such moves a breach of Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity.

Cairo stressed its right to take all measures deemed necessary under international law and the Joint Defense Agreement between Egypt and Sudan to ensure those red lines were not crossed.

Sudan descended into chaos in April 2023 when a power struggle between the military and the RSF erupted into fighting in Khartoum and across the country.

The war, now in its third year, has claimed more than 40,000 lives according to U.N. figures, though aid groups say the death toll could be far higher.
