The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has strongly criticised MultiChoice Ghana, accusing the company of failing to take Ghanaians’ concerns seriously, amid a growing standoff over DStv subscription prices.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, George said he flatly rejected a proposal by MultiChoice Ghana that would have allowed the company to maintain its current prices but prevent the transfer of subscription revenue from DStv abroad. The minister dismissed the idea as illogical and missing the core of the issue.
“They proposed that I allow them to maintain the collection of the exorbitant bouquet prices as they stand but order them not to send the revenue to their headquarters,” he wrote. “How does this proposal solve the real issue?”
The minister’s remarks follow a statement by MultiChoice Ghana defending its April price increases for DStv subscription services, despite a 10% appreciation of the Ghana cedi, lower inflation and falling fuel prices at the time. The company described calls for a price reversal as “not tenable” in the current economic environment.
But George, who has been vocal on the matter, maintains that Ghanaians deserve fairer prices and cited Nigeria as a precedent.
He pointed out that MultiChoice reversed its DStv price hikes in Nigeria after legal and parliamentary intervention, arguing that the same respect should be shown to Ghanaians.
“For far too long, corporations have fleeced the Ghanaian people,” he said. “There has been a RESET and it demands a new style of public service that is fiercely protective of the Ghanaian people.”
He also called on Ghanaian employees of DStv to support the broader public interest, saying that he remains open to “constructive engagements” – but only if they are “centred on price reduction”.
The standoff has attracted wide public interest, with consumers increasingly demanding regulatory action over what they see as high pay-TV subscription costs.
