Strong macro numbers mean little as living costs rise — Miracles Aboagye

Dennis Miracles Aboagye

Miracles Aboagye has questioned government claims of economic recovery, arguing that falling inflation and a stronger cedi have not translated into relief for ordinary Ghanaians.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (12 January), the Bawumia Campaign Communications Director said there is a “dangerous disconnect” between macroeconomic indicators and the lived realities of citizens.

He cited the case of a tomato seller at the Koforidua Central Market, whose annual income rose marginally from GH¢18,000 in 2024 to GH¢19,000 in 2025, yet now pays significantly higher utility bills and school fees.

“In 2024, inflation was about 23 per cent and she paid roughly GH¢3,600 in electricity bills. Today, inflation is around five per cent, yet her electricity bill has jumped to over GH¢4,600,” Aboagye said.

He argued that similar pressures are being felt by students, traders, drivers, and small business owners, despite government assurances of economic stability.

According to him, the benefits of a stronger currency largely favour importers and wealthy individuals, while workers and traders who operate entirely in cedis see no tangible relief.

“Macroeconomic improvement should reflect in the microeconomy. Right now, that proof is missing,” he said.
