Stop personal attacks ahead of internal contest – Afenyo-Markin charges NPP

The Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has charged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have expressed an interest in various positions in the party and who are willing to stand for election to stop undermining each other.

He said such a tendency could have a marked negative impact on the party’s fortunes in 2024.

Afenyo-Markin made this call when he addressed NPP colleagues at a workshop for the Majority Caucus in Kwahu, Abetifi, on Saturday (22 January 2022).

The workshop was aimed at enhancing understanding among Caucus members of certain key government policies and programmes.

“This is why it seems irritatingly too early – to a large extent, perilous – for those of our compatriots interested in leading our party at various levels to start aggressively undermining each other as some reports suggest,” he said.

The Effutu MP also said that if this worrying trend is not nipped in the bud, the consequences for the NPP’s campaign to break the eight-year electoral cycle may be dire, and could make the objective a mirage.

“I dare say that if we are not careful, we’ll end up working at cross-purposes, leading us ultimately to lose the confidence that the good people of Ghana have reposed in us,” Afenyo-Markin said.

“On the point above, I do submit that there is the need for all of us to learn from our mistakes in the past and ensure that we work together to break the eight,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin declared that he believes if members of the Majority Caucus stay determined to work together and support one another, success will crown their efforts. It is a period of critical importance, he said, and requires that caucus members work as a team.

The Deputy Majority Leader also said it is in members’ own interest that they do not allow petty issues to shake their resolve or derail the party in its drive to achieve its goal of winning the 2024 elections.

Divisionists must be kept at bay, he said, because staying united is one of the ways the NPP can ensure it breaks the eight-year jinx.

He assured the MPs of the leadership’s determination to put in place capacity-building programmes for all NPP MPs in the coming year to support them in their advocacy in Parliament for the government’s policies and programmes.
