  • "You know the late former President JJ Rawlings once said that even if the devil sat in a position where the citizens make sure the system is strong for them not to play rough, they will fix it. So Okraku Mantey as our big uncle who has been here from time is also capable of making a lot of changes."

The appointment of Mark Okraku Mantey as deputy minister-designate for Tourism, Arts and Culture is a “glimmer of hope for the arts industry”, dancehall artist Stonebwoy has said.

Speaking to Naa Ashorkor on Between Hours show on Asaase Radio on Monday 17 May 2021, the international award-winning musician said this is the first time someone with an in-depth knowledge in the industry has been appointed to such a position.

“You know the late former President JJ Rawlings once said that even if the devil sat in a position where the citizens make sure the system is strong for them not to play rough, they will fix it. So Okraku Mantey as our big uncle who has been here from time is also capable of making a lot of changes to work his way up on the ladder,” he said.

“I don’t remember an industry person getting to that height, so that brings some sort of hope for me, that somebody who understands the industry is now seated at that place.”

Stonebwoy said he is optimistic the deputy minister-designate will bring some reforms that will inure to the benefit of the music industry.

He said: “He is also capable of making a lot of changes. I mean to make his way up to the ladder where he is gotten to. I believe he is supposed to be clapped for… it comes with a lot of responsibilities.”

Stonebwoy, however, appealed to Mantey to help fix issues related to royalties if his appointment is approved.
