Younger-generation dignitaries, work colleagues, schoolmates, extended family, New Patriotic Party supporters and friends of Kojo Yankah from Ghana and the UK met yesterday (Friday 29 December) at the Empowerment Worship Centre in Dzorwulu, Accra, to take part in a service marking his “one week”.
Yankah was the executive assistant to Michael Ansah, chief executive officer of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), the multi-sectoral, multibillion-dollar initiative to build value addition in the country’s extractives sector by mining and processing bauxite on a large scale.
He was also in charge of communications at GIADEC and played a leading role in engaging people living in communities where the mining and bauxite processing facilities are to be sited.
Among faces at the packed service led by Pastor Gideon Danso of the multi-denominational Empowerment Worship Centre were Francis Asenso-Boakye, Minister of Works and Housing, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Michael Ansah of GIADEC.
Also present were Mustapha Ussif, Minister of Youth and Sports, Sammi Awuku of the National Lottery Authority, Kow Essuman, legal counsel to President Akufo-Addo, Hayford Attah Krufi, the chief executive of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority and former chairman of NPP UK, Joe Baidoe-Ansah, the former Kwesimintsim MP and minister of trade, and Kwaku Sakyi-Addo, the broadcaster and former chairman of the National Communications Authority.
Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe of the Office of the President, Shirley Kyei of the Minerals Commission and Akwasi Ababio of the Office of Diasporan Affairs were also among the mourners.
Fun-loving character
Yankah died on 16 December at the University of Ghana Medical Centre in Accra after suffering an aneurysm. He was 46 and had no history of serious illness.
A bright, jovial and popular figure in social circles at home and abroad, Yankah was a leading member and organiser of NPP UK’s youth wing, the Young Executive Forum and the party’s research group.
He held a BA in political science and government from the University of Ghana and an MSc in public policy from Queen Mary, University of London, and had managed the GIADEC office since 2018.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart from Aggrey Memorial School and wife, Shemaat, and three children.
The burial service and final funeral rites for Kojo Yankah will take place on Friday 23 February 2024 at the Lashibi Funeral Home in Accra.
A thanksgiving service will take place the following Sunday (25 February) at the Empowerment Worship Centre, Dzorwulu.
