Prof Christopher Ameyaw -Akumfi, a national chairman aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on Ghanaians not to politicise the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
He said the depoliticisation of the Free SHS programme would ensure the aim of the policy is achieved.
Ameyaw-Akumfi’s comment comes amidst the recent food shortage that has hit Senior High Schools across the country.
Speaking with Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (14 July), Ameyaw-Akumfi said the Free SHS programme is a good policy that must be safeguarded.
“If we face challenges in implementing Free SHS, then as a policy, that will clearly benefit the country for generations … we must move beyond partisanship to achieve this aim.”
“To have a president who ensures that despite all the hardship we are in, second cycle education is made free for all … Shows the thoughts of the man,” he said.
He added, “It is clear the concern the president has for the average Ghanaian … this has been true for a long time and the Free SHS exemplifies this.”
Increase GETFund levy to fund Free SHS
Meanwhile a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo last week suggested to the government to increase the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) levy to support the Free SHS programme.
The levy is a 2.5% charge on goods and services.
“Some of the radical things that I am looking for is for us to increase the GETFund tax so that we can guarantee that every single child in this country will have free education right up to the university level,” Addo said on Asaase 99.5 Accra’s news analysis show, The Forum, on Saturday (9 July 2022).
