Sports Authority to complete vetting of stimulus beneficiaries by next week

The National Sports Authority says only those who pass rigorous checks will qualify for support under the Youth in Sports scheme

The National Sports Authority (NSA) expects to conclude due diligence work on the list of sportsmen and women, presented by the various federations to be enlisted on the Youth in Sports programme run by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

This follow a memorandum of understanding between the NSA, YEA and the various sports federations.

In an interview with #AsaaseSports, the NSA’s public relations officer, Charles Amofah, said the Authority would ensure that only the right sportsmen and women benefit from the intervention.

Eligibility

“We have gotten the [full complement] list of athletes that were submitted by the various sports federations to the NSA,” Amofah said. “We have also started and are still in the process of vetting the lists of federations.

“This will be an ongoing process and so we expect that it will run into the next week. What we are doing now is that we are inviting all the athletes that have their names on the lists submitted by the associations last week.”

Amofah offered assurances that the Sports Authority will only approve names that pass its eligibility tests.

“We’ll approve them once we ascertain the eligibility of these athletes. We do not want these monies to go into the wrong hands.

“This stimulus package is for athletes who are not working, so we have to ensure that those who need them actually get the monies,” he explained.

Co-opting “athletes”

The YEA signed a memorandum of understanding with the NSA in the first week of July to co-opt unemployed sportsmen and women on to the Youth in Sports programme.

The beneficiaries will receive a monthly allowance of GHC500 a month for a period of six months.

It is unclear how much is being committed by the YEA to this phase of the programme, but what is certain is that it will benefit a thousand sportsmen and women.
