Odartey Lamptey breaks silence after winning appeal against ex-wife

The retired footballer has been involved in a seven-year legal tussle with his ex-wife since their divorce

The former Ghana international football player Nii Odartey Lamptey has finally broken his silence after winning an appeal against his ex-wife, Gloria Appiah.

Odartey Lamptey and his former wife separated in 2013, but have since been in and out of court over ownership of a property in East Legon, Accra.

Gloria had appealed to the court to grant her ownership of the seven-bedroomed house as part of her settlement.

However, after years of battle between the former couple’s lawyers, the Court of Appeal dismissed her case, saying she did not deserve the property.

The three judges who sat on the case reached a unanimous decision, ordering Gloria to move out of the property.

Happy man

Speaking after the ruling, Odartey Lamptey expressed his delight that the legal tussle was finally over after many years of attending court sessions.

He confirmed to the Accra-based Kasapa FM station that the court has ordered his ex-wife to move out of the house at East Legon.

Thanking his lawyers for their support, the former Anderlecht star said he prays that no man ever has to face what he went through.

“I feel happy now because it’s been over seven years of legal battle, but I thank God that finally, her appeal against me has been thrown out and the court has ordered her to vacate my mansion,” he said.

“It has not been easy at all but I thank the Lord Almighty for a battle well fought. I thank my lawyers, Kizito Beyuo and Iris K Aggrey-Orleans, for a great job.

“It’s my prayer that nobody experiences this kind of situation, because it can easily ruin your life.”

Seven years in court

Odartey Lamptey and Gloria Appiah’s marriage ended on the rocks in 2013 but the couple proceeded to court over alimony.

This was after the retired footballer learned that the three youngsters he had raised with his former wife were not his biological children.

The 45-year-old said he had heard rumours about his partner’s cheating and so decided to run a DNA test to ascertain the truth.

“In that short period, you’re finding out that they are not yours any more … I don’t know the kind of pain any human being can go through, more than that,” Odartey Lamptey said at the time.

His ex-wife, however, demanded that the seven-bedroomed mansion where they had lived be given to her as part of their alimony agreement.

This led to a long-standing legal battle, which has been concluded after the Court of Appeal dismissed Gloria’s claims to keep the house.

Odartey Lamptey has since remarried and been blessed with twin girls.
