Isaac Dogboe extols Hunter’s influence

First-time featherweight fight for Ghanaian hopeful Dogboe was a knockout in a Las Vegas thriller inspired by new coach Barry Hunter

Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe has spoken in glowing terms of Barry Hunter’s influence in his win over Chris Avalos on Tuesday night.

The Ghanaian boxer defeated the American in an eight-round, non-title bout at the MGM Grand Arena in Nevada with a technical knockout in the final round.

Speaking moments after what was his first bout in 14 months, Dogboe said his new trainer’s guidance from ringside had played a significant role in the knockout win.

Bout of nerves

“I had to listen, you know. I could hear his voice telling me to take my time, I should relax, I shouldn’t force it.”

The former World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion said this was relevant as it helped him settle after the initial nerves.

“Sometimes I was a little bit tensed, so once I went with the flow, everything just followed with the jabs and I felt great from then on.”

15 are a knockout

It was Dogboe’s first bout since he parted company with his father, Paul Dogboe, replacing him as his trainer with the two-man team of Patrice Harris and Barry Hunter.

The bout was also Dogboe’s first win in two years and his first in the featherweight division.

It takes his record in professional fights to 21 wins out of 23 bouts, 15 of which have come by way of knockouts.
