CAF to release $200,000 to each member association

The Confederation of African Football’s emergency committee supports its member associations as it tries to kickstart the domestic game

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will disburse a financial grant of US$200,000 to each member association as part of a $10 million stimulus package.

CAF’s executive council reached the decision to support the member associations in an attempt to lessen the impact of the COVID-19 disease on domestic football.

Subsequent to the executive council’s decision, the Confederation’s emergency committee gave approval at its meeting, which was held on Thursday 28 May by video conference.

No eligibility requirements

The amount is part of a grand total of $10.8 million that will be transferred to member associations. CAF has confirmed that all 54 member associations will benefit from the fund.

“Due to the fast spread of COVID-19, African MAs have suspended all domestic competitions, which has brought about huge financial burdens on their shoulders. CAF has thus decided to waive the eligibility requirements to access the annual grants, so all MAs can benefit during this difficult period,” said the Confederation’s president, Ahmad Ahmad.

This may not be the only financial relief package from the continent’s football governing body to its members, as plans are said to be far advanced for additional funds, purposely for resumption of domestic competitions.

Inter-club tourneys

In the second week of May, Africa’s governing body for football announced the disbursement of $3.5 million to all participants in CAF’s inter-club competitions for the 2019/20 season.

The money will cover the main two club competitions – the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, both of which were suspended after the quarter-final matches because of COVID-19.
