Black Stars can win African Cup with C.K. Akonnor, says Owusu

Samuel Owusu is calling on supporters of the Black Stars to believe in coach C.K Akonnor to win the AFCON

Black Stars winger, Samuel Owusu, is optimistic that coach C.K. Akonnor is the right man to end Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy drought.

The West African nation has not annexed the prestigious football trophy in Africa since 1982, having reached the finals in 2010 and 2015, but lost to Egypt and Ivory Coast, respectively.

The 24-year-old Al Ahly player is urging Ghanaians to be patient with Akonnor as he puts the team in shape to break the 38-year-old trophy jinx.

“C.K is a very good coach and so I just want to plead with Ghanaians to give him time to put the team in good shape,” he told GFA media.

“I can assure Ghanaians that with CK, we can bring the AFCON to Ghana because he is a very good coach. Even giving new players the chance to prove their quality, I think he is good because I like coaches who give the younger ones a chance to play and express themselves.”

The on-loan Al Fayha winger added his immediate target with the national team is to qualify for the 2021 AFCON final in Cameroon.

The Black Stars will play Sudan in the qualifiers this week on 12 November at the Cape Coast Stadium and the return leg in five days in Khartoum.

‘We’ve to beat Sudan’

“For me as a player, I want to be at the AFCON to see whether we can bring the cup back to Ghana and so, for now, I think we have to beat Sudan in Ghana because we have already taken the first six points,” he added.

“Beating Sudan in Ghana will ginger us to qualify for the AFCON. For now, my concentration is to qualify for the AFCON first,” Owusu stated.

Owusu made his Black Stars debut in 2019 and was also part of the team that exited the 2019 AFCON at the round of 16, losing to Tunisia in the penalty shout outs.
