Ashgold chief executive Frederick Acheampong resigns

Another head rolls at Ghana Premier League side that has been dogged by management problems

The chief executive officer of Ashantigold Sporting Club, Frederick Acheampong, has resigned from his post at the Premier League club.

Acheampong, who replaced Kudjoe Fiano in 2018, took to Twitter to announce the decision, which takes effect at the end of this month.

‘I have tendered in my resignation as CEO of Ashantigold SC, effective from 30 April 2020. I have grown immensely at the club but it is time I move on for personal reasons,” he said. “Thanks Champion, the club and the supporters for the opportunity.”

Acheampong’s resignation is the latest twist in a leadership crisis at the club.

Management meltdown

In March this year, the business mogul and club president Dr Kwaku Frimpong “resigned” following the team’s home defeat to Bechem United in the Ghana Premier League.

Fans hurled insults at him after the match and it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Frimpong stepped down, citing irresolvable differences with fans of the club. He also said that the fans did not believe in his administration.

Although there have been attempts to convince him to return to Ashantigold, it remains unclear whether he will accept or put the club up for sale, as technically he still owns it.
