This week in sports has seen disappointment for the senior national men’s football team, the Black Stars, embarrassment for Ghana football and Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta extending his deal with the Gunners until 2027.
Black Stars frustrated by late Niger equaliser in AFCON 2025 qualifier
Ghana’s Black Stars were left frustrated as Niger secured a late equaliser to draw 1-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier on Monday (9 September).
Despite dominating possession at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco, Ghana failed to convert their control into a win.
Left-back Alidu Seidu gave the Black Stars the lead with a powerful strike just before halftime, but Niger’s Oumar Sako headed in from a corner in the 81st minute to level the score.
Ghana escaped further embarrassment when Niger’s Boubacar Goumey hit the post in stoppage time.
The result raises questions for the Black Stars as they seek to secure their place in AFCON 2025.

Sports Ministry urges GFA to seek CAF approval for Accra and Legon stadia
The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) has directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to seek an urgent inspection from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the Accra Sports Stadium and University of Ghana Stadium.
This comes after CAF revoked the Category 3 status of Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium due to concerns over the pitch condition.
Both stadia are being considered for approval as alternative venues for upcoming international matches, with Ghana’s next fixture set for October.

Asamoah Gyan steps back from politics to focus on youth development
Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has announced his withdrawal from politics to concentrate on humanitarian efforts and youth development.
Gyan, who previously held a role in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee, revealed his decision in a social media post, citing regret over not dedicating more time to youth initiatives.
Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top scorer and remains a prominent figure in the country’s football history.

Hearts of Oak dismiss five-game ultimatum reports for coach Ouattara
Hearts of Oak have denied reports that coach Aboubakar Ouattara was given a five-game ultimatum to improve the team’s results.
The Phobians, who lost their opening Ghana Premier League match 1-0 to Basake Holy Stars, issued a statement calling on fans to support the team despite a difficult start to the season.
Since taking charge in February 2024, Ouattara has overseen more losses than victories, but the club insists there is no pressure on the coach regarding his future.

Mikel Arteta extends Arsenal contract until 2027
Mikel Arteta has agreed to a new contract with Arsenal, keeping him at the club until 2027. The Spaniard, who was initially appointed in December 2019, has guided Arsenal to an FA Cup victory and has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence.
The club is expected to confirm the deal before their north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday. Arteta’s leadership has been praised for stabilising Arsenal, and this extension signals the club’s confidence in his long-term project.
