‘Speak now’: Minority tells Mahama, Ayine to clarify stand on CJ’s concerns

The Minority in Parliament is urging President John Mahama and Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine to immediately break their silence and respond to troubling allegations raised by the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

The call comes days after Justice Torkornoo issued her first public statement since the initiation of proceedings to remove her from office—proceedings she says are marred by procedural irregularities, human rights violations, and what she described as a “coordinated attempt” to force her out without lawful justification.

Speaking at a media briefing in Parliament on Friday (27 June), the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, said the government’s continued silence is unacceptable and undermines the integrity of the country’s democratic institutions.

“The process, as it stands, lacks transparency and integrity. That is deeply troubling,” he said.

“The Attorney General has a constitutional responsibility to speak to these matters, and the President must also provide clarity on why these concerns have not been addressed.”

The MP further criticized the lack of information provided to the Chief Justice regarding the specific allegations she is expected to respond to.

According to him, even in cases where a prima facie case is determined, the President is obligated to issue a detailed opinion justifying that conclusion.

“It is the basic right of the Chief Justice to know the case she is facing. That is fundamental to any fair legal process,” Mr. Baffour Awuah noted.

“We are not just talking about one individual here. We are talking about the credibility of our judicial system.”

The Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is facing a five-member committee following petitions for her removal.

The Minority’s call comes amid growing concern that the proceedings could erode public confidence in the independence of the judiciary.
