South Africa: Democratic Alliance not a suitable partner says former SA Minister Lindiwe Sisulu

She drew historical parallels to the ANC’s previous coalition with the National Party, which ultimately failed due to fundamental differences.

Former South African Minister in the cabinets for four consecutive presidents, Lindiwe Sisulu, has strongly opposed the idea of the African National Congress (ANC) forming a coalition with the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Sisulu argued that the ANC should seek partners who align more closely with its values and mission. “We need partners who are ideologically linked to our own ideology, partners who will help us deliver on the promises we have made,” she stated.

She drew historical parallels to the ANC’s previous coalition with the National Party, which ultimately failed due to fundamental differences.

Despite the ANC’s need to form a coalition following its poor performance in the recent elections, Sisulu remained firm that the DA is not a suitable partner.

“No one is further from that than the DA,” she declared, criticising the DA’s track record in the Western Cape and their stance on key issues like the National Health Insurance (NHI) and employment equity legislation.

Sisulu also dismissed the idea of the DA occupying key parliamentary positions while the ANC leads the executive, questioning the need for DA oversight. “We don’t need a class monitor from the DA,” she said.

The former minister’s stance reflects a broader division within the ANC, with some members threatening to leave the party if it partners with the DA. The party’s leadership faces a challenging decision as it navigates coalition talks to maintain governance.

While some supported a coalition with the DA for its potential to combat corruption, others preferred alliances with parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) or the newly formed MK party, despite the complexities such partnerships might entail.

As the ANC deliberates its next steps, Sisulu’s remarks highlight the critical juncture at which the party stands, balancing the need for effective governance with staying true to its foundational principles.
