MP Francis-Xavier Sosu and 9 others renew push for anti-witchcraft bill

The bill's goals are to criminalise accusations of witchcraft and safeguard elderly women who are vulnerable to abuse

Francis-Xavier Sosu, the Member of Parliament for Madina, has once again introduced the Anti-Witchcraft Accusation Bill in Parliament.

The bill’s goals are to criminalise accusations of witchcraft and safeguard elderly women who are vulnerable to abuse.

In July 2023, the bill was first approved by Parliament; however, because of constitutional concerns, then-President Nana Akufo-Addo did not sign it into law.

The bill was left unresolved after the 8th Parliament was dissolved, despite strong public support and requests for its enactment from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

In the 9th Parliament, Sosu has the support of nine other MPs who are committed to seeing it become law.

Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor (South Dayi), Comfort Doyoe (Ada), Godfred Seidu Jasaw (Wa East), Hajia Laadi Ayii Ayamba (Pusiga), Katherine Adjoa Ntoso (Krachi West), Dzifa Gomashie (Ketu South), Zuwera Ibrahimah (Salaga South), and Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (La-Dadekotopon) are among them.

The Madina MP emphasised that the bill respects both Ghana’s constitution and international human rights standards, reaffirming his commitment to securing legal protection for elderly women who are at risk.

The Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which amends the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) to forbid the activities of witch doctors and witch finders as well as the accusation, labelling, or declaration of someone as a witch, was passed by Ghana’s Parliament on July 28, 2023.
