Starting 2022 right: Balance physical and spiritual wellness, says Rev Akua

The Anglican priest says Ghanaians must start 2022 right by giving priority to both their physical and their spiritual growth

Reverend Akua Ofori-Boateng, the priest and director of programmes for the Anglican Diocese of Accra, has called on Ghanaians to give priority to spiritual growth as well as their physical health this year.

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (3 January) on the topic “Starting 2022 right”, Rev Akua, as she is fondly called, advised listeners always to keep a positive mindset.

“Our minds are trapped in one little dark corner, and we continue staying there and end up getting exploited by making ourselves feel bad,” she told the host of the show, Kwaku Nhyira-Addo.

Whenever a person is trapped in staleness, she said, “our bodies manifest in sickness, and we end up with blood pressure, diabetes and other sicknesses”.

Time to recharge

Rev Akua called on everyone to spend more time with God, especially in the mornings, to “rejuvenate us” for the day.

“It’s like charging your phone so it carries you throughout the day. Spiritually, we run out of gas and we always need to recharge.

“We don’t need to get discouraged by the number of hours to spend on praying. You can spend between ten and 15 minutes and get your results,” said Rev Akua, who hosts The Word on Asaase Radio 99.5FM from Sunday to Thursday (starts 5am each day; shortened repeat on Sunday at 8am).

She also encouraged listeners to refocus and redirect their mindset in 2022 and fixating on the negatives and focus on what has been given them, such as good health and peace.

“It’s always thoughts on what we don’t have – food, clothes, etc – but the focus should be on what we have and utilising that and being grateful.”

She added that the only way “we can love other people is by loving ourselves”.

“Everything we’ve talked about on health issue,s like backache, bad posture, are all signs of lack of self-love, because if you love yourself, you will give yourself good food, you will sleep and treat yourself good,” Rev Akua said.

Stock-taking

For her part, Frimpomaa Ntiforo, a transformative coach, said Ghanaians can start 2022 right by taking stock of what “did not go right last year so you can improve on them”.

“You need to be aware of a situation and make it work. Make the best use of what you have now,” Ntiforo said.

“Sometimes when we feel stuck and we’re asked to talk about it, we say a lot. We need to be able to identify the real issues. Then know the choices to make to change it and how to even approach it.

“The bottom line is always love – giving it and receiving it. Change the way you live by changing the way you think,” she said.
