The brain eats itself in sleep deprivation, study says

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Sleep deprivation has been associated with a multitude of health problems for a while, but the effect might be even worse than has been thought, according to new research. A study by neuroscientists demonstrates that

chronic sleep deprivation will make the brain “self-clean” in an undesirable way, and this might lead to long-term neurological impairment.

The research focused on the brain’s microglial cells, which sweep out old and dying neurons to maintain the health of the brain. These cells typically remove unwanted connections when an individual sleeps to pare down

brain function. With sleep deprivation persisting over a long duration, however, the brain’s self-cleaning process goes into overdrive, removing even healthy neurons and synapses.

Chief researchers warn that this heightened activity in the brain can hasten the onset of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease down the line. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to

memory loss, poor concentration, and mood disorders like depression and anxiety.

To combat the dangers of sleep deprivation, experts recommend adopting good sleep hygiene practices, such as establishing a consistent bedtime routine, refraining from afternoon and evening use of caffeine, and limiting pre-sleep screen time.

The study is a sobering reminder of the necessity to obtain adequate rest to protect both mental and physical

well-being. In a world that seems to value productivity over rest, prioritizing sleep may be one of the most vital health decisions you can make.
