Sky Train case adjourned again as former GIIF chair is hospitalised

This marks the second adjournment in recent weeks. The court had previously rescheduled the hearing on 13 May, also due to Professor Ekumfi’s ill health

The trial of two former executives of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) has been adjourned once again by the Accra High Court’s Criminal Division.

The case, involving Professor Christopher Ameyaw Ekumfi, former board chairman of GIIF, and former CEO Solomon Asamoah, was expected to continue on Monday (20 May, 2025). However, proceedings were postponed to 26 May after Professor Ekumfi’s legal team informed the court that he had been hospitalised earlier in the day.

This marks the second adjournment in recent weeks. The court had previously rescheduled the hearing on 13 May, also due to Professor Ekumfi’s ill health.

The trial stems from the controversial Sky Train project, a proposed urban rail system that failed to materialise despite substantial investment. Both men are facing charges in connection with their roles in the initiative.

The court is expected to take Professor Ekumfi’s plea when proceedings resume.

Background

In the case against the two former top officials of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi and Solomon Asamoah are accused of unauthorised and wasteful disbursement of US$2 million for the now-defunct Accra Sky Train project.

According to the summary of facts filed in court, investigations showed that:

– No feasibility studies or due diligence were conducted before the funds were disbursed.
– No board minutes or internal records indicate any discussion or approval of the transaction.
– The fund transfer instruction was signed jointly by Solomon Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi without the necessary authorisation.

The state contends that neither GIIF’s investment committee nor its governing board reviewed the Sky Train proposal or approved the payment.
