Chigabatia passed away on Tuesday (9 January) at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra, where she was receiving treatment

Agnes Asangalisa Chigabatia, the former MP for the Builsa North, has died, sources close to the family have confirmed.

Chigabatia passed away on Tuesday (9 January) at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra, where she was receiving treatment for an unspecified illness.

The former Builsa North MP was born on 20 October 1956 at Chuchuliga in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

She acquired her middle school education at the Adda Middle School in Navrongo and Ayieta Middle School in Sandema.

Chigabatia later pursued her secondary school education at the St Francis Girls’ Senior High School in Jirapa. She went on to the Accra Polytechnic, where she acquired an advanced-level certificate in catering.

Deputy regional minister

Agnes Chigabatia stood in the 2004 general election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party and duly won the seat for Builsa North.

She attracted 6,160 votes, representing 33.7% of the total. Chigabatia served for a period of four years (from 7 January 2005 to 7 January 2009).

In this same period, she was also the deputy minister for the Upper East Region. She lost her position as an MP in the 2008 election, where she stood against Timothy Awotiirim Ataboadey of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Chigabatias constituency was one of the two out of a total 13 seats in Parliament for the Upper East Region won by the New Patriotic Party in the December 2004 election.
