Pressure mounts on Senegalese president as opposition parties plan protest on Friday

Opposition leaders have also formed the Front of Presidential Candidates (Fc 25) to fight for compliance with the electoral calendar

A band of frustrated civil society groups in Senegal are planning a national demonstration on Friday (9 February), after the announcement of the postponement of the elections by President Macky Sall,

According to the Aar Sunu election platform, these groups are called to protest: citizens, religious groups, socio-professional organisations and civil society figures.

Opposition leaders have also formed the Front of Presidential Candidates (Fc 25) to fight for compliance with the electoral calendar.

Key opposition leader DĆ©thiĆ© Fall said in a press conference that Macky Sall would be “illegitimate within two months”.

He also notes that all heads of state will no longer have to deal with Mack Sall starting on 2 April.

ECOWAS will hold an extraordinary session in Abuja to discuss Macky Sall’s decision.

After the exit of the Alliance of Sahelian States: Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the regional bloc, member states will now look to President Bola Tinubu, who is the chairman of ECOWAS, to make apt decisions to ensure the stability of the regional organisation.
