Ghana honours outgoing US ambassador with top award

Akufo-Addo was full of praise for ambassador Sullivan for what he say was her passion for human rights, especially of women and children

The outgoing US ambassador to Ghana Stephanie S Sullivan has been honoured by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with the “State Award of Grand Medal, Honoury Division”.

Akufo-Addo decorated the American envoy at the Jubilee House on Thursday when she paid a courtesy call on him to bid him farewell after her three-year tour of duty in Ghana.

Akufo-Addo stated in his brief remarks that during ambassador Sullivan’s duty tour in Ghana from 2019 – 2022, she devoted her career to serving the interests of the African continent and Ghana in particular.

Akufo-Addo was full of praise for ambassador Sullivan for what he say was her passion for human rights, especially of women and children.

He added that Ghana owes her special thanks, especially for her role in helping the nation to secure large quantities of COVID-19 vaccines from the US, as well as other efforts of hers that strengthened the relations between Ghana and the USA.

“We are very thankful for your efforts that helped us to undertake the most transparent election in the Fourth Republic in 2020. It enabled us to cement our reputation as a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa.

“We owe special thanks for the exceptional assistance Ghana received from the United States during the current COVD-19 pandemic when access to vaccines to countries such as ours which do not produce their own vaccine has been difficult and a harrowing experience,” Akufo-Addo said.

Akufo-Addo was hopeful that her departure from the shores of Ghana will not be the end of her friendship with the country.
