Bagbin rejects Ghana card as sole document for electoral registration

Samuel Tetteh, the deputy electoral commissioner in charge of operations, presented the CI on behalf of the EC

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has rejected a Constitutional Instrument (CI) presented by the Electoral Commission (EC) to make the Ghana Card the sole document for electoral registration.

Samuel Tetteh, the deputy electoral commissioner in charge of operations, presented the CI on behalf of the EC.

Bagbin insisted that the chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, appears in person to address reservations expressed by members of the House. On Thursday (24 February) evening, the House could not take a decision on the new CI, Draft Public Elections (Registration of Voters) Regulation, 2022.

The Speaker directed that the House makes a decision only after it has been briefed by the EC chairperson, the National Identification Authority (NIA) and the Finance Ministry.

“Our leadership will have to meet, and immediately have a word with NIA. They are prepared to come back as early as possible. We will allow the deputy minister of finance to be here to represent the minister. We will insist that the EC is represented at the highest level,” he said.
