A severe water shortage has hit Tamale and its surrounding communities, leaving thousands of residents struggling to access clean and reliable water for their daily needs.
Across several neighbourhoods, taps have run dry for months, forcing families to search desperately for alternative sources. The scarcity has disrupted normal routines, with many households unable to cook, bathe, or carry out basic chores without difficulty.
Each day, scores of residents, including women and children, are seen walking long distances with jerrycans and buckets in search of water.
At the few functioning boreholes and standpipes, long winding queues form as people wait for hours under the scorching sun for their turn to fetch water.
The situation has not only caused physical strain but has also affected productivity, as many people spend a significant part of their day just trying to secure water.
The crisis is generating growing anxiety among residents, especially as Muslims prepare to begin the annual Ramadan fasting period, when access to clean water is even more critical for cooking, drinking, and maintaining hygiene.
Some residents say they have been compelled to rely on unsafe and unwholesome water sources, raising concerns about possible outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Health risks, they warn, could escalate if the shortage persists without immediate intervention.
Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Chief Manager of Ghana Water Limited (GWCL), Stephen Amihere-Mensah, has called for calm and patience among the public.
He assured residents that management is working closely with stakeholders to resolve the supply challenges and improve water distribution across the metropolis.
According to him, measures are being put in place to restore consistent flow and ease the burden on affected communities.
