Senior staff of universities end strike

The members of the two associations representing university senior staff - SSA-UoG and FUSSAG - are returning to work

The Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association (FUSSAG) have suspended their industrial strike with immediate effect.

The two associations have been on strike since 2 August 2021.

In a press release dated 9 August 2021 and signed by Zakaria Mohammed, the national chairman of SSA-UoG, he said they are returning to the lecture halls because a road map had been reached “that serves as a guide to ensure sincere and fairness in a speedy resolution of all the impasse between us and the government.”

The decision follows a ruling by the National Labour Commission (NLC) and intervention from the minister of education, the minister of employment and labour relations, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on behalf of the government.

“I write on behalf of the National Executive Councils of the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association (FUSSAG), to suspend our industrial strike action which was declared on 2 August 2021, with immediate effect,” the statement confirmed.

Meanwhile, the NLC has threatened to drag the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to court for contempt if it fails to comply with a court order to end its strike.

“Media reports are indicating that they have decided to defy the court orders and if that is what they are going to do, then we would have to go to court to cite their leaders for contempt,” Ofosu Asamoah, the executive secretary of the NLC said.
