Senegal’s general elections are scheduled for 15 December 2024 following President Macky Sall’s announcement of the postponement and the subsequent dispute between the National Assembly and the Constitutional Council.
On 5 February, the National Assembly adopted the bill to postpone the general elections.
The bill was voted on almost unanimously by the deputies present, with 105 votes for and one against.
When the bill was passed, the discussion was marked by a physical fight between two deputies. The military evacuated the other concerned deputies before the vote.
This is the first time since 1963 that a presidential election by direct universal suffrage has been postponed in Senegal.
Senegal has faced political challenges, including civil unrest in June of last year over the imprisonment of Ousmane Sonko that caused death casualties.
Sonko has publicly positioned himself as opposition to President Macky Sall and is the founder of the political party Patriots of Senegal for Ethics, Work, and Fraternity” (PASTEF), which champions economic nationalism, anti-corruption measures, and social justice.
Senegal is now one of five other African countries to have its presidential elections in December, and the other countries include Ghana, Algeria, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and South Sudan.
