Vigilantism is a big threat to Ghana’s democracy, says National Peace Council

The NPC argues that violence perpetrated by party-affiliated vigilante groups has become a major danger to Ghana’s democracy and the peace of the nation

Ghana News Agency (Bibiani) – The National Peace Council (NPC) has called for the support of stakeholders in efforts to ensure a peaceful and violence-free general election.

Osei Yaw Owusu Sekyere, a member of the governing board of the NPC, made the call at a sensitisation workshop at Bibiani in the Western North Region.

He said politically motivated violence has become a worrying trend and he called for concerted efforts to help fight it.

Owusu Sekyere cited the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence, which awakened Ghana to the dangers of vigilantism, and the setting up of the Emile Short Commission, which gave birth to the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act 2019 (Act 999) to give legal backing to the fight against election-related violence.

He therefore urged the participants and all stakeholders to support the regional and national peace councils to ensure a peaceful and violence-free general election.

Decent language

Meanwhile, Atta Frimpong, senior assistant director at the Bibiani-Ahwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Assembly, has urged political party functionaries to use decent language in campaigning so as not to inflame passion and cause mayhem.

He also advised the youth to stay away from violence.

Frimpong charged participants at the workshop to educate the public to behave with decorum before, during and after the 7 December elections, so as to preserve the peace of the constituency and Ghana as a whole.

Later, in an open forum, participants unanimously expressed commitment to partnering the Regional Peace Council to sensitise the public about the importance of a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after December polls.

The workshop was organised by the Western Regional Peace Council, with support from the Danish embassy.
