Security agencies to be identified with special armlet on 7 December

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) says this will prevent people from infiltrating the various security agencies on election day

A special identification armlet will be provided for the various security agencies on election day, James Oppong-Boanuh, the Inspector General of Police, says. The intention is to prevent non-qualified individuals passing themselves off as security personnel on the day of voting.

The IGP was speaking in Koforidua in the Eastern Region during a day’s familiarisation tour of the Region.

“… for those who will be specifically sent to the polling station to perform duties, they will have a duty armlet. We are not unveiling it now because we don’t want any duplicates to be made,” Oppong-Boanuh said.

“You can be assured that when you get to the polling station every officer who is there, whether from the police, immigration or any other security agency, will have a duty armlet on one sleeve so that you can easily identify that person,” he said.

“So yes, there will be an identification. The identification will be different from what we used in 2016.”

The IGP said the police are ready to ensure that everyone votes peacefully on election day and he warned those who might wish to foment trouble on the day to stay away.

Blunt warning

“I’ve been to the chiefs and I have spoken to them to speak to the youths in the communities not to allow themselves to be used to foment violence during the elections,” he said, “because, if they do, the long arm of the law will catch up with them.

“I’ve also assured them that we in the security services will do our best to ensure that there is peace on that day …

“Let me appeal to our officers in uniform that on the day of the election, we should not be partisan or biased. We should be as professional as possible.

“Let me take the opportunity to also warn any troublemakers that on that day they should stay away from the polling stations,” he said. “Nobody should come there with any implement or any weapon, because we will face you squarely.”
