IGP presents special promotion mechanism for officers in Northern Ghana

The Inspector General of Police says the new mechanism is to motivate and encourage officers serving in the northern part of the country

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh, has announced that police officers who pass out of training and are posted to Northern parts of Ghana will be promoted three years before their next due promotion compared to their counterparts posted to areas such as Accra and Tema.

He said this is one of a raft of policies instituted by the police administration to motivate officers serving in the Northern part of the country.

Oppong-Boanuh made this known when he commissioned a 250-seat conference room for the Northern Regional Police Command in Tamale.

Personal contributions

The conference hall project was started in 2016 by the then Northern Regional police commander, Isaac Ken Yeboah, now the director general of the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), through personal financial contributions from senior police officers in the region.

The IGP commended the police chiefs who spearheaded this project, insisting it is not common that officers should finance such a project from their own pockets.

“This is not a common phenomenon for police officers to dip their hands into their pockets and construct something for the institution,” Oppong-Boanuh said.

“So I believe that the regional commanders who initiated and the one who completed deserve commendation,” he said.

Professional policing in 2020 polls

Oppong-Boanuh also called on all police officers to be professional before, during and after the 2020 general election.

He said all officers must endeavour to be circumspect and impartial when discharging their duties.

“You must act on every complaint that you receive and you must do so speedily to clear the doubt of all critics,” the IGP said.

He also advised the youth not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to perpetrate violence during the elections.

“Do not allow yourself to be convinced or to be persuaded by anybody to go into violence, because if you do, the long arm of the law will catch with you,” Oppong-Boanuh said.
