Deputy defence minister vows to deal with people who assaulted soldiers

Major Derrick Oduro says the soldiers were in the Dome Faase area on official duty and refutes claims that they were there of their own accord

Major Derrick Oduro, deputy minister of defence, has declared that residents who assaulted two soldiers at Dome Faase, near Kasoa in the Central Region, will be dealt with severely.

Major Derrick Oduro said the army will leave no stone unturned until the community produces the culprits.

This follows complaints by residents that they were being harassed and intimidated by soldiers.

There was chaos in the community after the coalition of Ga communities clashed with the Akyem Traditional Council over a piece of land.

Two military men at the scene were assaulted brutally by the angry mob, who accused them of taking sides.

Ghost towns

A day after the incident, over 300 soldiers stormed Dome Faase and Obom Domeabra.

The military officers reportedly made the swoop to retrieve the weapons of their assaulted colleagues, whose guns were seized by some residents.

The people of both towns subsequently fled their homes, leaving only women and children behind.

The soldiers besieged the towns and were searching from house to house for those who assaulted their colleagues.

On Wednesday, the Ghana Armed Forces arrested over 50 suspects alleged to have been involved in the incident.

Soldiers depart

The troops left the two communities on Thursday after finally retrieving their colleagues’ seized guns. This was confirmed by the municipal chief executive of Dome Faase in an interview broadcast on Class FM.

Joseph Nyarni Stephens also said that peace has finally returned to the town following a chaotic three days.

“I can assure you that the soldiers will leave the town today. The soldiers were beaten and their guns were taken away from them.

“So, they were looking for the guns and, by His grace, the guns have been found,” he said.
