Alajo “coup plot”: Dr Mac-Palm, seven others granted bail

The core eight people accused of plotting to overthrow the Akufo-Addo government are free – for now

An Accra high court has granted bail of GHC10 million, with two sureties each to be justified, to eight out of the ten people on trial for an alleged plot last year to destabilise the country.

The eight are to report to the Bureau of National Investigations head office twice every week.

To help prevent any attempt by the suspects to travel abroad while the trial is running, they have been told to deposit their passports with the court registry.

All out

The eight accused individuals bailed were Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, proprietor of the Citadel Hospital in Alajo, Accra, Donyo Kafui (alias Ezor, a blacksmith), Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, a freight manager, Gershun Akpa (a weapons mechanic with the Ghana Armed Forces), Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, Lance Corporal Sylvester Akankpewu and Johannes Zikpi, a civilian employee of the Signals Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Friday’s hearing was the first time all ten accused of the Alajo plot had appeared before the court.

The case has been presided over by Justice Samuel K Asiedu, an appeal court judge sitting as an additional high court judge, since the suspects’ committal proceedings on 3 March.

The ninth accused, Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Agordzor, was granted self-recognisance bail of GHC500,000 by an Accra high court on 21 January this year. The tenth accused, Warrant Officer Class II Esther Saan Dekuwine, has also been granted bail.

Explosive material

The ten accused have been charged with a broad range of offences, including conspiracy to commit treason, treason, conspiracy to possess explosives, arms and ammunition, and possession of explosives, arms and ammunition without lawful authority.

Among lawyers representing the putative participants in the alleged Alajo plot are Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu and Martin Kpebu.

They are expected back in court on 5 June.
