Second bid to stop CJ removal process fails at Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has, by a 4–1 majority, dismissed a case filed by private citizen Theodore Kofi Atta-Quartey challenging the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

The Court deemed the application unmeritorious.

This follows an earlier dismissal—also by a 4–1 decision—of a similar suit by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CenCES), which sought to overturn President John Mahama’s suspension of the Chief Justice and halt the inquiry committee’s work.

In both cases, Justice Yaw Asare Darko was the sole dissenter on the five-member panel.

Mr Atta-Quartey had asked the Court to halt the committee’s proceedings and suspend the President’s April 22 suspension order, arguing that the process lacked constitutional backing.

However, the Court upheld the President’s actions, allowing the inquiry to proceed.
