Scholarship Secretariat begins efforts to clear £39m student debt in UK

Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo Adjei, is leading the clean-up effort. He visited Brunel University London on Monday to initiate talks aimed at resolving the outstanding debt, which has left several Ghanaian students stranded and their academic futures in jeopardy

The John Mahama administration has begun efforts to clear a £39 million student loan debt owed to UK universities, a legacy the current administration describes as a “reckless” burden left behind by the previous governments.

Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo Adjei, is leading the clean-up effort. He visited Brunel University London on Monday to initiate talks aimed at resolving the outstanding debt, which has left several Ghanaian students stranded and their academic futures in jeopardy.

In a meeting with the university’s management, led by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Jonathan Wastling, both parties agreed to carry out a comprehensive audit of student records and financial claims. The goal, they said, is to ensure transparency and accountability as part of a broader settlement plan.

A structured payment plan is also being developed to prevent further disruption to the studies of affected students.

Speaking at an engagement with Ghanaian students at Brunel University, Mr Asafo Adjei reiterated the Mahama administration’s commitment to restoring confidence and dignity in Ghana’s foreign scholarship scheme.

“Let it be known: we will not allow the sins and failures of the past administration to destroy the futures of our young people,” he said. “Under President Mahama’s leadership, competent governance is back, and we’re getting the job done. Be rest assured.”

Mr Asafo Adjei is expected to continue similar engagements at the University of Portsmouth as the government moves to verify outstanding obligations and rebuild relationships with international academic institutions.
