Sarkodie sues Ecobank for alleged use of lookalike in Ad campaign

Ghanaian rap icon Sarkodie is taking legal action against Ecobank Ghana over what he describes as a violation of his intellectual property rights.
The case, filed on 25 March 2025, alleges that the bank used the image of a lookalike in a marketing campaign—an act the rapper believes misled the public into thinking he endorsed their services.
The move has sparked concern among fans and branding experts, especially considering Sarkodie’s current role as brand ambassador for First Bank, a direct competitor of Ecobank.
His legal team argues that the alleged misrepresentation not only infringes on his image rights but also undermines contractual relationships with other brands.
“Using a lookalike of a public figure—especially one with competing endorsements—crosses ethical lines,” Sarkodie’s legal representatives noted. “This wasn’t just misleading; it risked damaging our client’s professional credibility.’
In the lawsuit, Sarkodie is seeking a perpetual injunction to prevent Ecobank from using any imagery that suggests an affiliation with him. He is also requesting damages for what he claims is the unauthorised commercial exploitation of his identity.
Ecobank Ghana, the largest financial institution in the country by asset valuation, has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations.
The case is expected to raise important questions about image rights, ethical marketing, and brand representation in Ghana’s growing entertainment and finance sectors.
