Samoa Addo: Opoku-Agyemang’s criticism of WASSCE results apt

The private legal practitioner believes the former education minister was honest in criticising the outcome of the recent WASSCE results

  • "But you can’t take away her right to criticise, the proof is there and her criticism is that this is the first time that in the history of this country, a government had procured past questions for individual students."

A Private legal practitioner, Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, has said Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s recent pronouncement on Ghana’s 2020 WASSCE results was honest and fair.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang in an interview with Woezor TV questioned why Ghanaians are celebrating the outstanding performance of the SHS students in the 2020 WASSCE exams.

“We have also heard and seen students who wrote an exams, came out and it was like, you know we had an earthquake in this country, it wasn’t like one school or two schools … this same group performance is supposed to be outstanding that we shouldn’t be talking, it is the group I am referring to,” she said.

She added: “And they went and wrote the exams we heard of the leakage of the exams, we heard of invigilators being compromised, we heard many many things and we also saw the students come out and speak about, ‘No, this is not we were told will happen’, now these students have As and we are happy? It is up to us.”

Allow dissenting views

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s news analysis programme The Forum over the weekend, Samoa Addo said the government should accept dissenting views about the Free SHS.

“She had the right to criticise. That is something that you can’t take away from her. That is why she is also subject to also being criticised for whatever she says. Her statements will be put to test,” he said.

Addo added: “But you can’t take away her right to criticise, the proof is there and her criticism is that this is the first time that in the history of this country, a government had procured past questions for individual students.”

According to him, some developments prior to the release of the WASSCE results give credence to the claim by the former education minister.

“As a professional educationist, she is saying that particular exercise has the tendency, and there were demonstrations… and the videos on social media, these are not things that were conjured up, these videos are on YouTube, if you type it you will see it there. They said some of the questions were too difficult,” Addo added.
