Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (13 June), Dowuona offered both personal insight and professional caution.
“Social media has become my playground,” he said. “I go there to work—engage with audiences, find stories—but then I get distracted. Sometimes, I’m with my family and suddenly lost in a sea of unrelated content. My wife has to tap my foot just to bring me back.”
Dowuona noted that beyond personal distraction, journalists and content creators now face relentless pressure to be first with the news. “We are all publishers now,” he explained. “You’re consuming and producing content at the same time. That puts everyone in a precarious position where misinformation can easily spread.”
He admitted he had been caught in such traps himself, especially when trusted contacts shared unverified content. “You want to be fast, but we forget that the rule in journalism is ‘check, check, and check again.’ On social media, it’s more like ‘post first, fix later.’”
Using the example of a disputed doctorate from a dubious university website, Dowuona warned that even professionals can be fooled if they don’t verify timestamps, sources, and domains. “We discovered a fake Kinslow University site was created just last month. But people had already quoted it as the truth.”
He encouraged users—especially journalists—to make use of digital verification tools and to take responsibility for what they post. “Social media gives you the power to post and delete. But with that power comes a duty to be accurate,” he said.
