An economist has criticised the Acting CEO of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, after a video surfaced showing him sharing US dollars despite his public call for Ghanaians to favour the cedi over foreign currencies.
Dr. Kwasi Nyame-Baafi, a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy, questioned Gyamfi’s commitment to the long-term stability of the cedi, describing the incident as a “serious and deeply unfortunate” blow to Ghana’s economic credibility.
The video, which has since gone viral, shows Gyamfi handing out cash to popular televangelist “Agradaa.” The footage has sparked outrage on social media, with critics accusing Gyamfi of hypocrisy and undermining the campaign to strengthen the cedi.
Dr. Nyame-Baafi expressed concern that key figures leading the cedi advocacy might be quietly stockpiling foreign currency.
“While ordinary Ghanaians are being urged to dump the dollar for the cedi, it’s becoming clear that some of those leading the charge may be quietly stockpiling USD behind the scenes. It almost feels like they’ve lost confidence in the cedi themselves,” he said.
GoldBod has not yet issued a statement addressing the video or the subsequent backlash. However, the controversy has raised questions about leadership credibility at a time when Ghana’s currency stability remains a critical economic issue.
Dr. Nyame-Baafi warned that the country’s long-term economic health requires consistency and integrity from leaders, saying, “The stability of the cedi demands truth, not double standards.”
