Assan: Death of prison officer in Cape Coast rains pathetic

The prison officer, stationed at the Ankaful Prisons, was assisting residents to cross to safety when he got drowned in the process

A prison officer lost his life after hours of downpour in Cape Coast over the weekend, the Central regional minister Justina Marigold Assan has confirmed.

The prison officer, stationed at the Ankaful Prisons, was assisting residents to cross to safety when he got drowned in the process.

Speaking to sit-in host Benjamin Offei-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (20 June), Assan described the incident as pathetic.

“Unfortunately, we have lost one of our servicemen, a prison commander at Ankaful. When the rains was so heavy and he was trying to help some young men who wanted to cross over and we lost him,” Assan said.

“So pathetic, our heartfelt condolence to the family and Ankaful Prisons and all the workers there and the whole region,” she said.

The regional minister advised residents living in low-lying areas to relocate as experts warn of more rains in the coming weeks.

“Some of the communities have been cut off totally, and we are praying that we don’t receive more rains because if we do, we don’t know what will happen.

“So, we are just cautioning them. Those having their properties and other things in low areas, should move up, because the advise is that we are going to receive more rains, so we need to take good care of ourselves before the unexpected happens,” she added.

Assan commended the roads and highway ministry for the timely intervention in fixing the bridge that was destroyed by the floods over the weekend.
