Zimbabwe mining boss arrested for fraud

Henrietta Rushwaya was arrested at the Robert Mugabe Airport

The Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) president has been arrested for fraud after allegedly attempting to sell three mines she does not own.

Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi told local media that Henrietta Rushwaya had been taken into police custody after receiving a complaint about mining transactions.

Nyathi added that Rushwaya was “assisting police with investigations”. She appeared in court on Wednesday, and the state prosecutor opposed bail.

Ms Rushwaya was caught with six kilos of gold worth over US$330,000 which she was attempting to smuggle out of Zimbabwe in 2020. She was arrested at the Robert Mugabe airport.

She was a central figure in the Al-Jazeera Gold Mafia documentary, which exposed how vast amounts of gold had been smuggled out of Zimbabwe and sent to the United Arab Emirates.

This is not the first time Rushwaya has been involved in controversy. She was formerly the CEO of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and was tried multiple times for corruption, specifically for engaging in match-fixing.
