Rotary Club of Accra Cantonment East steps up for social impact with empowerment and education initiatives
The Accra Cantonment East branch is actively targeting Gen Zs and Millennials through its Interact and Rotaract clubs, welcoming ideas from younger members and exploring flexible forms of membership, including honorary and satellite formats

President of the Rotary Club of Accra Cantonment East, Eugene Ohene Agyen, has outlined bold new directions for community empowerment and development as the club begins its new Rotary year, pledging continuity, innovation, and inclusiveness in service delivery.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (3 July), Agyen highlighted the club’s multi-sectoral approach to social impact over the past seven years — spanning education, healthcare, conflict prevention, and environmental sustainability, and now expanding to economic empowerment.
“With being a Rotarian, it’s easy. You don’t need to be rich or retired. You just need some time, a skill, or an idea — and you are welcome to make a positive impact in your community,” Agyen said.
Flagship Initiatives Driving Change
At the heart of their efforts is the EMPIRE Project, a skills development and seed funding initiative targeting women in underserved communities. Over the last two years, the project has trained beneficiaries in soap making, beadwork, and other crafts — while also providing business mentoring, bookkeeping support, and startup capital.
“We sponsored about 25 women last year alone,” Agyen shared. “This year, we’re tweaking it. Men, especially male artisans, will now be included. Empowerment isn’t just for women — everyone deserves a shot at financial independence.”
Another standout initiative is Teacher in the Box, a tech-driven literacy intervention. The club refurbished a school’s classroom into a fully equipped digital laboratory with 15 computers and four flat screens. The space runs a server-based educational tool that provides access to coding lessons, e-libraries, and science content — all offline.
“It’s transforming teaching,” Agyen said. “Now teachers can display diagrams on screens instead of sketching skeletons on blackboards.”
New Projects for 2025: Health and Energy Access
Looking ahead, the Rotary Club plans to roll out the Solar Vaccine Fridge Project to support rural health facilities lacking cold storage systems for vaccines.
Using solar-powered refrigeration, the initiative aims to help preserve vaccines for effective immunisation campaigns, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
Also on the horizon is an expanded health awareness campaign focusing on prostate and cervical cancer, with free screening opportunities for the public.
Membership Drive and Youth Engagement
With over 72 Rotary clubs in Ghana today, Rotary International is more than a century old globally, and continues to adapt.
The Accra Cantonment East branch is actively targeting Gen Zs and Millennials through its Interact and Rotaract clubs, welcoming ideas from younger members and exploring flexible forms of membership, including honorary and satellite formats.
“Rotary is fun, flexible, and fulfilling. Our meetings at Château Le Jardin every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. are open to all who want to serve,” Agyen noted.
“Service Above Self”
Agyen shared a deeply personal reflection on what the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” means to him:
“It’s not about having free time; it’s about making the choice to give. That joy — seeing someone smile because of something you did — that’s the real reward.”
With the theme “Let’s Unite for Good”, the Rotary Club of Accra Cantonment East is calling on professionals, artisans, students, and changemakers across Ghana to join hands in service and take action for lasting change.
