Renowned American singer Roberta Flack, best known for her soulful rendition of “Killing Me Softly with His Song”, has died at the age of 88.
Her publicist confirmed that she passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Flack had been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) since 2022, a condition that ultimately made it impossible for her to continue singing, leading to her retirement from performing.
A Legacy of Musical Excellence
Born in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Roberta initially pursued a career in classical piano before transitioning into jazz and soul.
She rose to international fame in the 1970s, winning back-to-back Grammy Awards for Record of the Year—first in 1973 for “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and again in 1974 for “Killing Me Softly with His Song.”
Her smooth vocals, emotional depth, and ability to reinterpret songs with profound expression made her one of the most influential artists of her time.
A Passion for Education and the Arts
Beyond her music, Flack was also a dedicated music educator, teaching in Washington, D.C., before achieving stardom. She later founded the Roberta Flack School of Music, providing free music education to underprivileged children, a testament to her lifelong commitment to the arts.
