RISE-GHANA condemns Bawku shooting, calls for investigation

A long-standing tribal conflict in Bawku in the Upper East Region has been fueling violence in the area

The human security, governance and communication units of RISE-Ghana, has condemned the recent shooting in Bawku linked to the tribal conflict in which an 81-year-old horse trader was killed and several others injured.

The organization says the disturbances are worrying as lives and property are lost.

It has, therefore, called for an end to the atrocities.

In a statement, the executive director of RISE-Ghana, Awal Ahmed Kariama, called on the security agencies in Bawku, the National Peace Council and other stakeholders, to open thorough investigations to unravel the factors responsible for the disturbances.

He also urges stakeholders especially the security agencies in Bawku to pay attention to early warning signs to avert an escalation of the fighting in troubled Bawku.

The statement, while commending the security agencies for containing the situation, appealed to the two feuding factions to resort to non-violent means to settle their grievances and to stop the destruction of life and property.

“We want to call the attention of The Ministry of Interior, REGSEC, the National Peace Council and other stakeholders to as a matter of urgency commission investigation into following early warning signals that have the potential to derail the relative calm,” the statement said.

The statement also cautioned politicians and government appointees against pronouncements that can further undermine the relative calm in the area.
