Rihanna ends her three-year music hiatus with new song “Friend of Mine”

Barbadian music icon Rihanna has announced the release of her first song in over three years, “Friend of Mine,” as part of the soundtrack for the upcoming Smurfs movie, in which she also stars.

The Grammy-winning artist made the announcement on Instagram, sharing a new trailer for the animated film alongside a caption that read: “new #SmurfsMovie trailer featuring ‘Friend Of Mine’ from the Smurfs soundtrack out Friday. Pre-save now.”

The track, set to drop on Friday (17 May 2025), marks her first musical release since 2022’s Lift Me Up, the Oscar-nominated ballad for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went platinum in 2023.

Rihanna voices the character Smurfette in the new Smurfs movie and joins an A-list cast that includes John Goodman, James Corden, Nick Offerman and Sandra Oh. In addition to her voice role, she also serves as a producer on the film.

This latest move has reignited hopes of a long-awaited album from the pop star, who recently confirmed at the 2024 Met Gala that new music is “definitely” still on the way.

Smurfs is set to premiere in cinemas worldwide on 18 July 2025.
