Trader remanded for allegedly swindling policeman

The trader allegedly collected a generator worth US$15,000 from the complainant under the pretext of showing it to his client but he absconded

An Accra circuit court has remanded a 41-year-old trader, Jeffery Owusu, who allegedly swindled a senior police officer of US$15,000.

Owusu is said to have collected a Caterpillar D343 generator worth US$15,000 from a deputy commissioner of police under the pretext of showing it to his client who needed same to buy but Owusu disappeared with the generator.

The accused person was nabbed when he got involved in another matter and the complainant in that case led the police to arrest him at his hideout.

Owusu has been charged with defrauding by false pretences, but he has pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Halimath Abdul Baasit, remanded Owusu into police custody and issued a bench warrant for his alleged accomplice, Alhaji Dramani Wayo, in Kumasi. The accomplice failed to appear in court.

Owusu claims that he sold the said generator to Wayo. The matter has been adjourned to 26 April.

The prosecutor opposed a bail application by Owusu’s lawyer.

The facts of the case are that the complainant is a deputy commissioner of police (name withheld) stationed at the police headquarters and the accused person resides at Sapeiman in Accra.

The prosecution said in July 2016, the complainant offered his Caterpillar D343 generator of sale at the cost of $15,000 and the accused was introduced as someone whose client was interested in the purchase of the generator.

The prosecution stated that the complainant released the generator to the accused person to show it to the said client. Owusu failed to return the generator and he was nowhere to be found.

On 20 February 2017, the matter was reported to the police and the accused person was arrested.
The prosecution said Owusu admitted the offence in his caution statement.

He pleaded with the police that he would return the generator or the money, but he failed and went into hiding.

All efforts to find Owusu proved futile hence a forfeiture bond was served on his surety. The surety could not produce the accused.

On 27 March 2023, a similar case was filed at the police station. The complainant in this second case led the police to arrest Owusu at his hideout.

During interrogations, the prosecution stated that the accused said he sold the generator to Wayo in Kumasi. When Owusu led the police to Wayo, he was nowhere to be found.

The police contacted Wayo on phone and invited him to the police station. Wayo said he “will not report to any police.”
