Richard Ackom: Deputy CHRAJ commissioner is dead

The death was announced in a notice dated 22 March, 2024, and signed by Henry Ashley, the director of human resources and administration, on behalf of the Commissioner

The deputy commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) Richard Ackom has passed away.

The death was announced in a notice dated 22 March, 2024, and signed by Henry Ashley, the director of human resources and administration, on behalf of the Commissioner.

The notice, made available to the GNA, stated: “It is with a heavy heart that we inform members of staff of the death of our Deputy Commissioner (APR), Mr. Richard Ackom Quayson, who passed away unexpectedly on the 21 March 2024, after a short illness.”

Quayson was appointed deputy commissioner of the Commission in August 2005, with oversight of the Commission’s anti-corruption mandate and public education

About Richard Ackom

Richard Ackom Quayson until his death served as the Deputy Commissioner for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) with oversight on the Commission’s Anti-Corruption mandate, and Public Education and Research.

Quayson joined the Commission as Senior Legal Officer in 1993, having worked as Legal Officer of the predecessor institution of CHRAJ, the Office of the Ombudsman, from 1987 to 1993. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Commissioner, he was Regional Director for Western and Central Regions.

Mr. Quayson chaired the National Working Group that developed Ghana’s National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) and is the Member of the Commission with oversight for its implementation.

He is the Vice Chairman of the High Level Implementation Committee (HiLIC) and Chair of the Monitoring and Evaluation Committee (Monicom) of the NACAP.

He also chairs the National Working Group responsible for the Review of Ghana’s Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

He is also a Member of the National African Peer Review Mechanism Governing Council of Ghana, having served two terms as an Eminent Member of the Governing Council.

Quayson is a lawyer by training, called to the Ghana Bar in 1987. His expertise is in human rights promotion and protection, administrative justice and corruption prevention and investigations. He is married and father of two children.
