1. Ali Farka Touré (Mali)
Often referred to as the “African John Lee Hooker,” Ali Farka Touré was a Malian singer and guitarist known for blending traditional Malian music with the blues. His unique style earned him international acclaim and he won two Grammy Awards during his career.
2. Mounira Mitchala (Chad)
Often referred to as the “Chadian Panther,” Mounira Mitchala is a prominent singer and actress known for her advocacy through music. Her songs often address social issues such as women’s rights and peace in Chad, combining traditional sounds with contemporary styles.
3. Dimi Mint Abba (Mauritania)
Known as the “Diva of Mauritanian Music,” Dimi Mint Abba was a celebrated singer and musician who played the ardin, a traditional Mauritanian harp. She was renowned for her powerful voice and her ability to blend traditional Moorish music with modern influences.
4. Bombino (Niger)
Bombino, whose real name is Omara Moctar, is a Tuareg guitarist and singer from Niger. His music blends traditional Tuareg sounds with rock and roll, creating a distinctive style that has gained him international recognition. Bombino’s lyrics often reflect the struggles and aspirations of the Tuareg people.
5. Amadou and Mariam (Mali)
Amadou and Mariam known as a blind musical couple from Mali. The music known as Afro-blues mixes traditional Mali sound with rock guitars, Syrian violins, Cuban trumpets, Egyptian ney,Indian tablas and Dogon percussion. In combination these elements have been called “Afro-blues”. They were nominted for a grammy in the category Best Contemporary World Music Album.
